“I want to have a baby!” – Planning a pregnancy, folic acid and micronutrients
A baby can really turn your life upside down, while of course bringing you the greatest joy and love imaginable. Couples wishing to conceive want to give their baby the best start in life. And there is plenty they can do for this!
When planning a pregnancy, the couple should ensure a healthy and active lifestyle with plenty of exercise, periods of relaxation and a balanced diet. Having a healthy and varied diet is important for fertility. Fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy and wholemeal products, nuts and occasionally fish, meat and eggs should therefore be regular items on the menu.
Exercise in the fresh air is good for the body and promotes balance and wellbeing. And sufficient sleep is vital.
It is also important to avoid all sources of stress. The more relaxed a couple approaches the situation, the faster they can fulfil their wish for a child. Nicotine and alcohol should be avoided. They are proven to have a negative effect on fertility.
Even with balanced nutrition, however, the increased requirement for certain vitamins and minerals can often not be covered by diet alone. Primarily, these include heat- and light-sensitive folic acid (vitamin B9), vitamin B12 (especially in the case of a low-meat or meat-free diet), vitamin D3 and iodine. Therefore, the additional intake of a suitable dietary supplement should be started as early as the family planning stage.
From planning to conceive through to the end of the 12th week of pregnancy: Folio 1 basic
Folio 1 basic contains 800 micrograms of folic acid, 9 micrograms of vitamin B12, 20 micrograms of vitamin D3 and 150 micrograms of iodine. With this dose, Folio 1 basic is ideal in providing mother and child with the most important micronutrients from the start.
The body should already have a sufficiently high folic acid level at the onset of pregnancy. This is because folic acid contributes, among other things, to closure of the embryonic neural tube, from which the baby’s central nervous system later develops. Folic acid thus significantly reduces the risk of malformations such as “split spine” (spina bifida).
In Folio 1 basic, folic acid is combined with vitamin B12. There is a very good reason for this: Folic acid can only be fully effective in combination with vitamin B12 . Vitamin B12 is thus often referred to as the “auxiliary vitamin” to folic acid. Besides this, vitamin B12 also supports the normal formation of red blood cells and normal energy metabolism.
Vitamin D3 is essential for the development of normal bones and muscle function and contributes to a properly functioning immune system in the baby. Furthermore, a good supply of vitamin D3 lowers the risks of certain complications during pregnancy.
Iodine is a very important mineral that is necessary for the normal production of thyroid hormones. These hormones control the physical maturation and development of organs, the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system. Moreover, they also make a decisive contribution to intellectual development. The additional intake of iodine is also important because the fetal thyroid gland does not start producing its own hormones until the 12th week of pregnancy. Before then, the unborn child is dependent on the mother’s iodine supply.
Folio 1 basic, which comes in a convenient click dispenser, is very simple and straightforward to take. Just one mini tablet per day is swallowed whole with a little fluid during a meal. One pack of Folio 1 basic contains 90 mini tablets to last for three months. The micronutrients are carefully selected and are great value for money.
From the 13th week of pregnancy up to the end of the breastfeeding period, it’s time to switch to Folio 2 basic. This will ensure that the baby continues to receive an optimum supply of the micronutrients folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin D3 and iodine.
If additional iodine should not be taken for medical reasons, Folio 1 basic iodine-free und Folio 2 basic iodine-free are available.
